what remains

when the race goes sideways

most stories celebrate the perfect day. this isn't that.

When you strip away the result, the podium, the glory - what’s left? For Adam, it was the willingness to keep moving. To finish out of respect for the course, his crew, and himself. For Alice, it was letting go of the race she envisioned, and still finding her own line of excellence. For all of us, it’s a reminder that the runs, rides, and races we remember most aren’t always the fastest. They’re the ones we had to fight for.

about the collab

This collab grew out of Adam and Alice’s journeys: his at Western States, hers at Leadville, and the spirit captured in What Remains. Two athletes in very different places: one chasing a second Western States win, the other setting out to complete only her second 100 miler. Both had their days unravel. Both kept going anyway.

When we swapped stories of gritty finishes, we kept circling the same truth: people love watching elites gut it out because it mirrors what the rest of us have to do. There’s this unspoken fraternity of finishers, a society of stubborn miles, hard-earned lessons, and the grace to keep moving when the plan falls apart.

To bring that idea to life, we worked with Auteur Sportif to create the International Society for Intrinsic Exploration. Unlike explorers and scientists who’ve broken barriers thought impossible, the only membership requirement here is a self-imposed struggle to unlock the mysteries of your own mind. It’s our way of celebrating that gritty death march to the finish line, where curiosity, resilience, and the courage to discover what you’re truly made of live.

The tee and hat carry subtle nods to Adam, Alice, and their races, while also serving as a badge of belonging to the Society. These pieces are more than merch. They’re a mark of membership. They’re flying, so grab yours while you can and wear your spot in the club.

“I think there’s a lot of value in demonstrating that runners at the back of the pack, they’re still pushing themselves too. They’re still searching for their own kind of excellence.”

thanks from the team

honoring the people and places that make these stories possible.

A portion of proceeds from this collab goes to the high school team Adam coached and Alice’s foundation of choice, Neutral Zone, a nonprofit teen center that played an integral part in her upbringing. Supporting the next generation of athletes and creating pathways for people to discover their own strength is part of what drives us at Skratch Labs.

We’re grateful to share this project with you and hope it inspires you to explore what it means to be human. To the race directors who make these dreams possible, thank you for building the courses, communities, and finish lines where stories like Adam’s and Alice’s can unfold. See you out there, fellow explorers.
